Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a highly effective non-invasive treatment that alleviates pain, kickstarts recovery and metabolism and drastically improves your blood circulation. Safe, high-energy sound waves are transmitted from a machine in a circular motion, increasing blood flow and systematically removing pain and calcium deposits from your tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones.

This non-surgical technology has existed for over 40 years, with a lot of science supporting how it helps restore the body's natural healing capacity. At Relieve Clinic, our practitioners have witnessed this first hand, with a rapid recovery rate of patients recovering from their chronic injuries.

What conditions does Shockwave Therapy treat?

Our Shockwave therapy service in Leeds can help treat acute and chronic pain associated with the following conditions:

  • Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
  • Golfers Elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Hamstring Tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis (policeman's heel)
  • Shoulder pain
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
  • Bony heel spurs
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Achilles Tendinopathy

Shockwave therapy is a cost-effective alternative to surgery and a successful alternative to other non-invasive treatments. In particular, it helps relieve pain in people who suffer from repetitive strain problems involving your joints and soft tissues. Also, if you are someone who participates in a lot of exercise or has frequent injuries, it can complement other treatment modalities such as osteopathy or physiotherapy.

What to expect from Shockwave Therapy

Our osteopaths at Relieve Clinic, Leeds will first carry out a consultation and examination and then brief you about the diagnosis and session ahead. During a shockwave therapy treatment, a gel will be applied to your problematic area. A handheld shock wave applicator will be used to transmit waves over the area at high speed. Whilst this occurs, a slight inflammatory process will be triggered in the injured area, aiding blood circulation and promoting healing.

The sessions typically last between 10-15 minutes, depending on your condition. It takes typically 3-5 treatments, one per week, to notice the effect. We find that people may start to notice results after the first few sessions. Our specialists will check in and review your symptoms throughout the treatment to see how the pain is progressing.

Are there any side effects with Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy side effects are minimal and it is generally a safe treatment. However, there is a small risk of:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Numbness in the area

If you experience any of these effects, tell our practitioners, who will follow up with you. Most of the time, they're short lived and tend to go within 24 hours of each session.
