Sitting all day? Osteopathy can help
Even with an ergonomic workstation setup, sitting in a chair for prolonged periods of time significantly increases the chances of having lower back pain, as well as many other conditions. The reason for this is because sitting in the same static posture puts strain on the muscles, joints, ligaments and other structures of your back, neck, arms, shoulders and legs.
Muscles at the front of your hips (hips flexors) and chest (pectorals) can shorten, while muscles in the lower back can overstretch and lengthen. Sitting in an office chair for most of the day can also cause joint pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, back, hips and knees. You may also experience headaches, pins and needles in your arms/legs and repetitive strain injury.
It may become second nature to slouch over or down into the chair. But having a slouched posture also compresses the discs and surrounding structures. After a while, poor sitting posture can cause intervertebral disc strain which leads to a higher risk of a prolapsed or bulged disc (slipped disc), which may contribute to, or aggravate neck pain, back pain, or sciatica.
Ideally, it’s best to avoid sitting for long periods throughout the day. Take regular mini-breaks from your desk to prevent stiffness and decrease strain. Go for a walk at lunch to get the blood pumping to your muscles and discs.
How can an osteopath help?
On average 8.9 million working days are lost each year from people taking time off due to musculoskeletal disorders.
Osteopathy can save you undue pain: now and in the future. We can undertake postural analysis to help you become more ‘body aware’, and for you to understand which posture is best for your muscles, ligaments, joints and discs. We can also give you functional, rehabilitative exercises that you can perform at your desk, or at home, to relieve stiffness and pain.
If you’re suffering pain in your back or neck from sitting at your desk for long periods, then a few sessions of osteopathy can help. We may also recommend sports massage, functional exercise and kinesiology taping, as these treatments may improve posture, reduce muscle tension and improve joint mobility.
Can osteopathy prevent future injuries?
Routine osteopathy treatment can help with avoiding injuries at work. Just like having a car serviced, it may help having your body assessed by a professional and get it ‘tuned up’, so that it runs efficiently. This reduces the chances of it ‘breaking down’ unexpectedly.
Conditions like back pain or neck pain tend to worsen the longer you leave them. This makes some conditions harder to resolve. We would recommend make an appointment to see your osteopath if you start to notice any twinges, aches, pains or stiffness at work.
